      <image:title>Let there be Light Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>This image is of a popular subject, the pier and lighthouse at Roker, Sunderland, in the UK. It’s taken at first light in the summer when the sun rises north of east, allowing the outer edge of the pier to be lit like this for a few moments. It requires getting up at ouch o’clock. So early in fact that I was sharing the sea front with a few people still heading home from a good night out.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Let there be Light Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>Taken at the sunset end of the day in Whitley Bay, UK. The lighthouse and associated buildings stand on a piece of land that becomes an island at high tide. At low tide, you can walk across a short causeway which is underwater on the right hand side of the image.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Let there be Light Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>The same lighthouse as the previous image, this time well after the sun had set. Taken from some distance south using a long lens, and a long exposure, gives the painterly effect in the sea I was after.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Let there be Light Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>Tynemouth, UK, is the gateway to the historic shipyards of Newcastle upon Tyne, which are now largely disused. As such an important historical river entrance for shipping, there is a lighthouse on each of the two sea walls that stretch from the river to the North Sea. This image is taken from the north side of the river looking south, and with this image I was lucky enough to win first prize in the “Places” competition run by the Port of Tyne.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another image of a Chandless Estate tower block in Gateshead UK, during its demolition. Even though it looks a little superimposed, the planes were there, honest! Its traditional to have a Red Arrows flypast during the Great North Run (half marathon) and I wanted an alternative and unique shot. To get this I had to anticipate the flightpath of the jets and point my camera at the sky hoping that my positioning was ok. You get literally a couple of seconds warning and no second chances with the flypast.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Making this image took some patience. Taken in Provence (the place to see lavender in France) I spent literally the whole day driving around the same region trying to capture the harvest in full swing. Having noticed machines standing idle earlier in the day, I returned to this spot as a last ditch attempt at the end of the day, and got lucky.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The dark skies in the Languedoc, southern France, are wonderfully dark and especially good for star trails. The question then becomes what to shoot the star trails with?! Since this region of France is renowned for its wine, a vineyard seemed a good choice, and when we are in this area i am always drawn to this old building on the edge of rows on vines. A cold clear night is really good for this kind of photography but i did loose the last few frames from the sequence that makes of this shot when the lens fogged over in the increasingly cold temperature.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Me - About me</image:title>
<image:caption>Thank you for visiting my site. My 'proper job' is in engineering, but in my spare time I have a passion for outdoor photography, especially landscape and seascape. I do also enjoy shooting a wider range of subjects when the mood takes me. This is somewhat reflected in my image mix included here. I hope you enjoy browsing my galleries, and find the information about my images interesting. I am self taught, so there is much trial, experimentation and a healthy dose of learning by my mistakes too. Lots of hanging around, abortive trips, searching for the right light, weather and tides. I gained my Licentiateship with the Royal Photographic Society in 2011, and further developed my portfolio to gain Associate status in 2012. Having done all that work, I now simply make images for fun. I shoot primarily with Canon (5diii) but also use an Olympus micro four thirds body, an iPhone, and most recently a dji drone has been added into the mix. Please do keep coming back to my site when you have a moment, I will try and keep adding images and new galleries as my work continues to develop. Richard Peace ARPS</image:caption>

A ballroom was added in 1920, and later the funfair. Located near the seafront, the Spanish City has a 180 ft-long (54.8 m) Renaissance-style frontage and became known for its distinctive dome, now a Grade II listed building. The lighting projected onto the facade was part of a temporary art installation celebrating the funfair history of the building. It’s normally plain old white in colour.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Queensferry Crossing, opened in 2017, is the latest of three principal bridges crossing the Firth of Forth north and west of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Taken looking up one of the three towers on this cable stayed bridge during construction (the crane has been subsequently removed) the white cables that support the bridge deck fanning out below.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bridging the Gap Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>Taken from adjacent to the south tower of the new Queensferry Crossing, this image shows the new bridge’s older siblings. In the background is one of the most iconic engineering structures in the world, the Forth Bridge, carrying trains north of Edinburgh since its opening in 1890. In the foreground, and appearing to hover above the rail bridge is the 1964 Forth Road Bridge, which although pictured here with HGV traffic now carries public transport only following opening of the new Queensferry Crossing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bridging the Gap Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>This bridge is included here as a deliberate contrast to the form and scale of the Forth Bridges above. This is a scene that has changed radically due to the removal of many of the iconic (now diseased) trees that feature here, in common with many other lengths of the Canal du Midi in the Languedoc, southern France. This is one of my most treasured images, and not just because you can't see the scene like this anymore, but also because of the many hours I spent painstakingly removing intrusive telegraph wires, and their reflections, that originally spanned the foreground of the image.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Parallels Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>This image was taken traditionally as far as camera technique is concerned, from a beach on Tyneside in the UK. I took it with this post processing in mind, applying horizontal blur to simplify out the distracting details, thus allowing a focus on the colours and mood of the scene.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Shot from Saltburn beach in the UK on a beautifully calm summer's day. I was taken by the gentle ripples. Here the lines were accentuated by shooting a long shutter speed and horizontally panning the camera. And in case you are think this kind of image is easy?! This is one of only a couple of successful frames from perhaps 100 or so attempts that day.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Parallels Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>And now for something different. Taken on the Isle of Mull in Scotland, UK. The image is of the leading edge of our camper van window, opened out to a horizontal position, whilst we sat inside waiting for the rain to clear. Patience and perfect timing was necessary for this image, and similar to the ripples image above there are many other failed shots also captured that morning. Look carefully into the forming droplet and you can just make out the hillsides along the sea loch I was shooting towards.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Parallels Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>Anyone who is familiar with travelling on the London Underground in the UK might just recognise the subject here. In the foreground are the parallel lines of the platform edge : yellow warning line, the ridged edge of the platform, and white edging line. Beyond the platform (mind the gap) there is the track, and beyond that along the back wall of the station are the multi coloured power and data wires. I applied a horizontal blur post processing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Parallels Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>This images captures 7 trees at sunset along the side of the Canal du Midi in the Languedoc, southern France. The canal was calm (so the lower part of the image consists of the tree trunks reflected in the water) and the light was magical. The blurred effect was created by using a long shutter speed, but this time with a vertical pan of the camera.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:loc>https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5eda708c1764e65f07b4bfa5/t/5eda71011764e65f07b4e034/1591383409060/</image:loc>
      <image:title>Parallels Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>Not altered reality at all (although you could be forgiven for thinking it was), the image is a stacked series of frames shot from a tripod to capture star trails in the night sky. So no camera movement, or blur created in post processing. The series of frames was taken over a 15 minute or so period one evening in Whitley Bay in the UK. The coloured rainbow lines are real, part of a laser light installation, I framed them against a redundant telegraph pole to create the illusion of coloured telegraph wires.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Taken in New York City from a sightseeing boat on the East River. I figured the only way to get a useable image from a moving boat after dark was to improvise, so here is another taken as a vertical pan. You can make out the dominant green coloured Empire State Building in the centre, with the yellow Chrysler Building immediately to its right.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The magical, fairytale, disneyesque walled city of Carcassone, France. I used a tripod to take this image so I could photobomb it and create a focal point. The apparently unreal blue of the sky was real, honest. Just good timing at the height of the blue hour.</image:caption>

This was the case one morning when on the Caledonian Canal which threads its way through the Great Glen in Scotland. However with a relatively still canal surface to play with, and plenty of interesting reflections from the sky, it was just a matter of patience, waiting for the magic drop of water.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I sprang into action when I saw the developing drama in the sky over the beach as evening approached. We had already had a fall of snow whilst the water was at low tide, which unusually settled on the beach. A surreal scene. Whilst I recall the scene vividly, it may prove to be a tricky image to read. The dark patch to the left is a crown on the beach where for some reason the snow didn’t settle, and the middle ground is dominated by the freshwater burn which enters the sea across this part of the beach.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another image of a Chandless Estate tower block in Gateshead UK, during its demolition. Even though it looks a little superimposed, the planes were there, honest! It’s traditional to have a Red Arrows flypast during the Great North Run (half marathon) and I wanted an alternative and unique shot of them. To get this I had to anticipate the flightpath of the jets and point my camera at the sky hoping that my positioning was ok. You get literally a couple of seconds warning and no second chances with the flypast.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“i have an awful feeling we’re not going to get our fees on this job” is a quote from the film Get Carter starring Michael Caine. Another star of the film is the multi storey car park in Gateshead, UK in which a classic and violent scene was filmed, with that quote coming at the end of the scene. An iconic structure on the Gateshead skyline from its completion in 1969 to it’s eventual demolition in 2010, the car park is a classic example of brutalist concrete architecture, designed by Owen Luder.</image:caption>

Erected as a smaller version of Blackpool's Pleasure Beach, it opened in 1910 as a concert hall, restaurant, roof garden and tearoom. Its normally plain old white in colour.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inside the Aldgate East London Underground station, I was taken by the almost perfect symmetry of the scene, and the choice of exits. My wife Sam obliged as the main subject here. Shot from the opposite platform, we had to do a number of pre-choreographed takes to get a suitable pair of images, as passing tube trains and many other passengers tended to get in the way. Once captured, the handheld image layers could be aligned in post processing, to reveal a figure apparently heading to each exit.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I earned this image - three hours waiting in a roadside drainage ditch in July 2016 enabled me to capture the Tour de France peloton in the way I wanted. I was lucky that the yellow jersey wearer (the leader and eventual winner of the 2016 race), Chris Froome, happened to pass on my side of the road. He was closely chaperoned by his Sky sponsored team mates, riders so organised in a protective line around him that they are often referred to as the Sky Train. In post processing I added some additional interest to the image by creating a horizontal reflection of the original photo.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This image is not of a tree on an island. It’s actually based on the image I took of a tree on the shores of Lake Bassenthwaite, in The English Lake District. The image has been horizontally reflected down the trunk of the tree in post processing, and then offset from centre. The intention is for it to look like a tree on an island on very first glance. Hope it works!</image:caption>

<image:caption>How do you produce a different image of one of the most famous sights in Rome, Italy? And how do you fit it all in a single frame? Lots of individual images taken, overlapping and at different angles, to allow a reconstruction of the fountain in post processing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Most famously photographed by the legendary Ansel Adams, the mighty Yosemite National Park in California, USA, is a real draw for landscape photographers. Half dome is a much photographed subject, so again how to capture something different? I mounted my camera on a tripod and shot a series of images at c 2 minute intervals as sunset developed, came, and went. In post processing I was able to demonstrate the progression of the sunset over the scene by splicing together the image slices I had recorded.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I entered this image into a competition at my local photography club, and was delighted that the judge dismissed its credentials out of hand, concluding “anyone can take a photo of an old poster”. It was actually created from a “straight”photo, post processed in a similar style to the old railway posters, with text added and then finished with an ageing effect to give the impression of some deterioration and water damage. Saltburn cliff lift is the oldest operating water-balance cliff lift in the UK. Construction began in 1883, the lift becoming operational the following year. It has a height of 120 feet (37 m) and a track length of 207 feet (63 m), resulting in a 71 per cent incline.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The wonderfully retro Rendezvous Cafe sits on the promenade above the beach, just north of Whitley Bay in England, UK. The building has been around since the 1930s, and has a traditional tea, sandwiches and ice cream menu. I took a series of images at opening up time over the space of five minutes or so whilst the one guy went through his opening up routine. I overlaid them in post processing and used a gentle old film effect filter to add a slight retro feel.</image:caption>
